Asked by presenter Patricia Karvelas why fewer women were appointed to the cabinet than to the shadow cabinet during the opposition party’s time, Marles pointed to the electoral defeat of MPs Kristina Keneally and Terri Butler.

“Obviously we are faced with the circumstance that two very important women in terms of Kristina Keneally and Terri Butler are not re-elected,” he said.

“From a Labor point of view, it is obviously a tragedy that two women of the caliber of Kristina and Terri are not here to serve. They obviously would have served in the cabinet had they been elected.

“But… we have a line-up of women at the helm who completely define the character of what the Albanian Labor government will be.”

The Albanian government will have 10 women in the cabinet, three more than the previous Morrison government.
