Manchester United’s summer transfer budget has been revealed by The Athletic. According to Laurie Whitwell, United’s potential spending in the coming months could amount to £120m, with Erik ten Hag backed in this transfer window. Fans will be expecting something of a cultural revolution at Old Trafford after previous failures to throw money at big names to no avail, and the arrival of Ten Hag seems like the perfect time for this to happen.

What impact might the budget have on summer transactions?
Manchester United are set for a busy summer of transfer activity as Erik ten Hag looks to rebuild the squad.
In midfield, both Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba will leave the club when their contracts run out, while the likes of Juan Mata and Edinson Cavani will also leave for free at the end of their deals. Similarly, the Red Devils are looking to offload several players, with Anthony Martial, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzabe among the many players they are willing to let go of this summer.
Since the £120m is a base budget, this could be increased significantly due to player sales.
Frenkie de Jong is one of the midfielders that United are looking for this summer. He would be available for a reduced price of 80 million pounds and Barcelona would need to raise funds to comply with the rules of financial fair play. However, this amount of money would consume a significant proportion of Ten Hag’s available budget in Theater of Dreams, and he will have to think long and hard about whether he is willing to spend that much on a player. Signing De Jong would be a great deal for the Red Devils, regardless of the price, as it would fix the problem of him in midfield that has existed for many years, and Jurrien Timber could join him in moving to Manchester this summer.
