An armed robbery was reported Tuesday night in downtown Washington at 10th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, an unexpected location for such a crime, not because it’s downtown but because it’s steps away from the headquarters’ front door. of the FBI.

Officers were called to the intersection around 6:45 pm after a robbery with a weapon was reported nearby, a police spokesman said. The victim was not described and it was unclear what was taken. No injuries were reported.

Although the frequency of robberies has increased in the city this year, some places seem unlikely places for such crimes to occur.

Certainly, a break-in at the front door of the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building, listed as 935 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, would not be expected. But the building spans an entire block, from 9th to 10th streets, where the theft was reported.

In addition, the FBI facilities in Washington are guarded by the FBI Police, a uniformed force tasked with the security of FBI facilities.

It was unclear Tuesday night how much thought was put into the location of the heist by those who carried it out.

Although the headquarters building is large and imposing in its bulk, there is little dramatic or vivid signage to suggest the work taking place inside.

And he wasn’t sure from the officially available preliminary information which of the four corners of the intersection was the site of the crime.

But it is also true that the large federal building on the south side of Pennsylvania, across from the FBI building, is the headquarters of the Department of Justice.
