The Rockies have selected the right-hander’s contract Chad Smithreports Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette (Twitter Links). In corresponding movements, southpaw Helcris Olivarez was moved to the 60-day disabled list due to a shoulder strain, while right-hander Ashton Goodeau he was optioned to Triple-A. However, the Goudeau transaction is just a move on paper, as Allentuck points out that Goudeau will act today as the 27th man for the Rockies’ doubleheader with the Nationals.
Not to be confused with the Chad Smith who used to pitch for the Tigers and A’s, this Smith was selected in the 11th round of the Marlins in the 2016 draft, and was acquired by the Rockies in exchange for Jesus Tinoco in August 2020. Just days shy of his 27th birthday, Smith is now set to make his major league debut.
During two seasons with Triple-A Albuquerque, Smith has an impressive 2.58 ERA and a 28.9% strikeout rate in 52 1/3 innings of relief in 2021-22. After battling control issues for much of his pro career, Smith has shown great improvement this season with just a 6.9% walk percentage in his 19 frames of work. If Smith has been able to capitalize on his dominance, he could be a very intriguing reliever to watch, given his speed, ability to miss bats and his ability to induce ground balls (averaging over 60% ground balls during his minor league career). ).
